Description

Jellyfish Games is an independent Montreal-based game company made up of a worldwide team of industry veterans. We develop games that reflect our own tastes: deep, system-driven, games with a focus on rewarding creativity, cleverness and skill. Every game should be a novel and meaningful experience, providing players with excitement, insight, and more than a few laughs!

History

Foundation

Jellyfish Games was started in 2013, in a Montreal coffee shop. A passionate group of professional game developers, not content with making games by day, met up every Tuesday night to show off side projects and collaborate. One day Dave Williams pitched Adam Blahuta an idea for a game called Astrobase Command, who immediately fell in love with the concept. Adam and Dave attempted to kickstart the project, but it proved to be the wrong time. Afterwards, Jellyfish Games expanded to include Daniel Dahl and Max Shields, and the completed party embarked on a 4 year montage of growing the studio by the traditional means of bootstrapping and contract work while developing Astrobase Command and growing its tightknit community. Many adventures were had!

Levelling Up

Between 2013 and 2017 the team juggled work on external contracts while learning how to be business owners operating a work-for-hire studio, developing Astrobase Command, and keeping our fans fed with updates. During these years, the game was transformed from a core concept into game designs and many prototypes, as the production code and art took shape.

Return to Kickstarter

At the beginning of 2017 we realized we were very close to completing all the features required for an alpha version of Astrobase Command. It was time once again to attempt crowdfunding for finishing capital, using all the skills we had learned and the much improved team composition. We were ready for the next phase! In May 2017 the Astrobase Command Kickstarter reached is goal, providing the team with funds to take the game to a paid alpha access, and also opening many other doors.

Alpha and Beta

The team delivered the first alpha builds to backers in August 2017, as promised during the campaign. Armed with valuable feedback, they made significant improvements before making it available to the wider public on itch.io. After many updates to the alpha the team got the game to a higher level and in May 2020 the first Beta was released and many updates followed.

Currently

Having had a successfull beta period over the last year Astrobase Command is now headed towards a full release on the 6th of May 2021.
